The ULI Young Leaders Group held a presentation and panel discussion on March 7, 2013 how the real estate industry is leveraging the latest technological advances in internet multi-media for the purposes of “crowdfunding” and “crowdsourcing.” Local Developer Ben Miller and his colleague Brandon Jenkins spoke about how they are using the web sites Popularise and Fundrise as tools to encourage participation and investment in real estate projects. Mentor Groups Tour Union Market in Northeast D.C.
On the evening of March 20, two mentors and five mentees had an opportunity to tour the Union Market project in northeast DC. Reynolds Allen, Development Manager at Edens, led the tour along with Katie Bucklew, an Investment Manager at Edens and coordinator of the Mentor program for ULI. Reynolds gave the group a detailed history of the market and its current renaissance. Union Terminal Market opened to the public in February 1931. ULI Washington Young Leaders Group: A Service Opportunity – Capital Area Food Bank Event Recap
On February 2nd, a group of about 20 volunteers joined us at the Capital Area Food Bank. Volunteers spent about three hours packing bags of food filled with items from cereal to canned vegetables. We went through dozens of pounds of food, sorting and packing, so that the items could be delivered to the Food Bank’s partner organizations to serve the hungry. The Yards – Redesigning a Historic Riverfront for the 21st Century Event Recap

Approximately 130 people attended the event highlighting The Yards project in Southeast Washington near the Navy Yard. How to Raise a Real Estate Equity Fund Event Recap
On January 23rd, the Young Leaders Group hosted a breakfast to discuss fundraising for real estate investments. The discussion began with Jeff Scott, Eastdil Secured, explaining how institutional investors view real estate investments within their portfolios. Jeff discussed how the current low yield environment is undermining the ability of pension fund managers to achieve the 7-8% returns projected by their actuaries. Many managers are responding by increasing allocations to alternative assets including real estate. 2012 THEARC Holiday Volunteer Event Recap
By William Rich Around 20 volunteers from ULI Washington’s Young Leaders Group went to the Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC) in the Congress Heights neighborhood of the District of Columbia on Monday, December 3 to help out at their annual holiday party. Volunteers assisted children with trimming the holiday tree in the lobby before having their pictures taken with Santa.
