Recap- WLI Guided Rum Tasting

Archipelago

ULI members braved the record breaking heat on Wednesday, August 10th to network and enjoy an exclusive members-only summer rum tasting at Archipelago, a tiki bar on U Street.  Archipelago is owned by local bartender Owen Thomson (formerly of Bar Pilar and Rose’s Luxury) and his colleagues Joseph Ambrose, Noah Broaddus and Ben Wiley.  The tiki bar opened earlier this year and is DC’s first legitimate tiki bar in more than a decade.  The Washington Post describes Archipelago as “the only place in town where you can sit on a stool carved to resemble a tiki god and sip a Mai Tai while listening to jittery ‘60s surf instrumentals and checking out a shrine of Tom Selleck memorabilia.”

Conversation

Participants began the evening with a daiquiri and snacks including cheesy nachos, tasty ham and cheese sliders, and shrimp toast. The group was then led through a selection of three rums starting with El Dorado 12 year, followed by Coeur d’ Ambre Rhum from Martinique and finally Appleton Signature Blend from Jamaica.  After showing the group the proper way to taste rum, Ben Wiley, one of the co-owners, described each rum’s flavor profile, barreling technique and aging process.  The night ended with a fresh pina colada and conversations among the group and Ben.
