ULI Washington Played Ball! with the Miracle League of Alexandria

The Young Leaders’ Community Service Service Committee hit a home run on Saturday, October 20th volunteering with the Miracle League of Alexandria. Roughly 20 volunteers from a wide array of ULI’s membership helped developmentally disabled participates play an exciting baseball game. Volunteers were used in the field, on the base paths, as cheerleaders, and to MC the festive event. Urban Agriculture with 11th Street Bridge Park Plots Service Opportunity Event Recap

ULI kicked off fall in style this past weekend, teaming up with 11th Street Bridge Park Plots to rejuvenate a garden in Wayne Place. Wayne Place, a transitional housing complex for foster youth in Southeast, incorporates gardening into their community, which helps eliminate food insecurity for the foster system graduates. Dawning shiny new ULI vests and spurred on by some bumping beats, the volunteers prepared the existing garden plots for the fall planting season. Why not grow your own food! ULI Washington Young Leaders get hands on with 11th Street Park Bridge Plots and DC Housing Authority residents

About 40 volunteers came out to build an urban farm plot, in a DC Housing Authority owned site, located near Capitol Hill. Volunteers included ULI members and their friends, 11th Street Park Bridge Plots organizers and their affiliates and some local residents. Everyone worked side-by-side. Volunteers worked hard and enjoyed each other’s company in the process. Once Again, ULI Washington Young Leaders Get their Hands Dirty with City Blossoms!

ULI flexed its muscles this past weekend, teaming up with City Blossoms to rehabilitate a garden at the Eagle Academy PCS in Southeast DC. With only three hours to complete this project, it was all hands on deck from the start as the City Blossoms team split the volunteers into a few groups, each focused on a different phase of the project. DCBIA 25th Annual Community Improvement Day Event Recap

On Saturday, September 23rd, approximately 10 ULI Washington Young Leaders volunteered at DCBIA’s 25th Community Improvement Day at DHCA’s Benning Terrace Community Center in Southeast DC.  DCBIA’s vision is to help make Washington, DC a vibrant city that is meeting significant challenges to be a livable, competitive and thriving community for all.  ULI Washington helped improve the site for Benning Terrace residents by shoveling mulch, planting new shrubs, and weaving ribbon designs into the fence (using the Benning Terrace Football team colors).  This year’s DCBIA Community Improvement Day had over … Read More

ULI Washington Young Leaders Get their Hands Dirty with City Blossoms!

On Saturday, April 29th, the ULI Young Leaders held a volunteer event with City Blossoms, a nonprofit dedicated to fostering healthy communities by developing creative, kid-driven green spaces. The weather was great and the turnout was fantastic. About 25 ULI members provided volunteer service at an outdoor vegetable garden located at a local public charter school located in Northeast DC. Volunteer activities included weeding, mulching, planting, painting signs and other general cleanup duties. Miracle League of Alexandria Service Event Recap

Last Saturday, October 15th, the ULI Young Leaders held a volunteer event with the Miracle League of Alexandria and had a great turn out with over 15 people with idyllic weather.  ULI Washington volunteers assisted special needs adults in playing a game of baseball.  The volunteers were matched up with players in the field to help throw the ball around the diamond during each play.  They also helped by being the announcers and base coaches.  A great time was had by all volunteers and players.

Community Forklift Volunteer Event Recap

On Saturday, April 16th, a group of ULI Young Leaders spent the day volunteering at Community Forklift in Hyattsville, MD. Community Forklift is a non-profit reuse center that provides home improvement materials, appliances, and fixtures at a low and affordable cost to the public. These materials are procured through donations of unwanted and salvaged materials throughout the entire DC metropolitan area. Interfaith Clothing Center Service Event Recap

Last Saturday, February 6th, a group of ULI Young Leaders spent the morning volunteering at the Interfaith Works’ Clothing Center in Rockville, MD. Interfaith Works is a nonprofit agency that provides a range of services to meet the needs of the poor and homeless in Montgomery County. The Interfaith Clothing Center provides qualified, low-income families with clothing and home goods free of charge, allowing them to use more of their resources on food, rent, utilities, medicine, and other basic needs. ULI Washington Holiday Service Opportunity: Community of Hope Holiday Market Event Recap

On Saturday, December 12th, over 35 ULI Washington Young Leaders volunteered at Community of Hope’s Holiday Market Event at the organizations Conway Health Center in Southwest DC.  ULI Washington provided and helped children build gingerbread houses and with arts and crafts, along with greeting, distributing toys and helping with handing out hot chocolate and cookies.
