ULI Washington Holiday Service Opportunity: Community of Hope Holiday Market Event Recap

On Saturday, December 9th, over 35 ULI Washington Young Leaders volunteered at Community of Hope’s Holiday Market Event at the organizations Conway Health Center in Southwest DC.  ULI Washington volunteers helped children build gingerbread houses and with arts and crafts, along with making holiday cards, distributing toys and helping with handing out hot chocolate and cookies. Construction 101: From Plans to Punchlist Event Recap

On Monday, November 20, the Young Leaders Group hosted its first Real Estate 101 discussion of the season, this focused on “Construction 101.”  The event combined a strong theoretical foundation with real-world insight to give attendees a complete picture of the challenges and opportunities in constructing a building. Sirens, Squash, and Stacks: A Tour of Westlight and Square 50

On November 8th, 2017, the Young Leaders Group Programs Committee hosted “Sirens, Squash, and Stacks” with a tour of Westlight and the Square 50 project in the West End neighborhood of Washington, DC. The Westlight (2301 L Street NW) and Square 50 (2233 M Street NW) were developed by EastBanc and JBG Smith through a unique joint public/private partnership with the District. ULI NEXT hosted its first joint flight event of the 2017-2018 program year at the POD DC in China Town on November 1st. ULI Washington Panel Provides Recommendations for Brainard Warner Adaptive Reuse in Kensington, MD

A Project Analysis Session (PAS) was held on November 3, 2017 at the Town of Kensington’s Town Hall.  The sponsor of the PAS was the Montgomery County Department of Parks (MNCPPC) which is the current steward of the 4.5-acre property.  The site includes two historic buildings that had been used as a nursing home facility for about 50 years.   The original house on the site was built in 1891 by Brainard Warner, the founder of the town of Kensington and a significant figure in the development of Montgomery County and … Read More

Event Recap – Liberty at Lorton Case Study

On Saturday, October 14th, ULI members headed to Lorton, Virginia for a free event that introduced them to the redevelopment of the Lorton Reformatory that housed prisoners from Washington, DC. Lorton was operated by the District Department of Corrections. Originally commissioned by Theodore Roosevelt in the early 20th century, the Lorton Reformatory defied prison norms from the beginning.
