WLI’s Womens Leadership Series, Session One Recap

On March 15, almost 50 women, representing a broad cross-sector of professions and companies in the commercial real estate world,gathered at the offices of Arent Fox to attend the first seminar in a WLI Leadership Series.  This first of three seminars led by Rebecca Shambaugh focused on Building Your Personal Brand.  Ms. Shambaugh explained to the attendees that everyone has a brand whether they specifically cultivate it or not.  This brand is based on the impression you leave with others and unless you consciously attend to  the brand, these impressions may not be the ones you would like people to have of you.  Shambaugh  led several visioning exercises to help participants define their best elements and differentiate themselves from others in a positive way to achieve their career goals and aspirations.  The following questions were posed to attendees to focus their attention on their personal brand:

  • Why are people drawn to you?
  • Why do others want to invest in you?
  • What do you want people to think and say about you?
  • How do you need to “show up” to achieve that impression?

WLI.2To supplement the in-person learning opportunities, attendees were given a book written by Ms. Shambaugh titled Make Room for Her: Why Companies Need an Integrated Leadership Model to Achieve Extraordinary Results.  The book focuses on how companies can achieve extraordinary results by consciously creating and nurturing gender balanced teams.

The series will include two more session on April 12 and May 17th.  These sessions will focus on strategies and techniques for speaking up and being heard, as well as building and using your networks, among other topics.
