ULI Washington members and non-members of all ages are invited to join the ULI Washington Young Leaders as we hold a spring service event with City Blossoms in Washington, DC on Saturday, April 29th from 10am to 1pm. City Blossoms is a nonprofit dedicated to fostering healthy communities by developing creative, kid-driven green spaces and innovative resources. City Blossoms provides bilingual, free, and affordable after-school, in-school, and summer programming to predominantly Latino and African-American youth ranging from ages two through teens. They serve neighborhoods in which children and youth may not otherwise have access to green space. Since 2009, City Blossoms has worked on over 50 sites nationwide.

Washington DC is our home base where we test and innovate new ideas for designing and implementing urban gardens that are communal, educational, artistic expressions of their surroundings. Currently City Blossoms is working at 13 sites in Washington DC, including 10 gardens on educational campuses and two Community Green Spaces where we continue to experiment and develop our ideas.

We will all convene around 10am within the garden and do a quick introduction before splitting up into smaller working groups. Typical work day tasks include painting signs, weeding different parts of the garden, planting seeds, laying out mulch, and some light building. City Blossoms advises everyone who participates to dress in old work clothes and closed toe shoes. Other than that, everyone is encouraged to bring water bottles, bug spray, sunscreen. City Blossoms will provide gloves and tools, but encourages volunteers to bring their own gardening gloves if you have a pair.
