ULI Washington Presents: Entrepreneurship 101- Started at the Bottom, Now We’re Here.
Most in the real estate industry dream at one time or another about setting off on their own and leading their own deals. A few have actually done it and been successful at making it work. Entrepreneurs must find a blend of vision, hard work, and capital to take the first steps. Then they must find the right mix of resilience, optimism, and ability to adapt to continue on after the inevitable stumbles.
Please join the ULI Young Leaders’ Real Estate 101 Committee on Monday, June 26 for a discussion with three real estate entrepreneurs at varying stages in their careers. The discussion will feature one seasoned entrepreneur developer, John Shooshan, who started his own development company more than three decades ago, and two younger developers, Andrew Rubin and Paul Grayson, who left larger firms to start their own. Mr. Shooshan will offer lessons gained from growing and leading his own company. Messrs. Rubin and Grayson will offer their perspectives on embarking on a venture in the current real estate cycle. The interactive discussion will allow the panelists to reflect on their careers and experiences and offer advice to each other and the audience.
Speakers will include:
- John Shooshan, CEO and President of the Shooshan Company, is responsible for directing and implementing the strategic objectives and goals of his company, which is today leading the development of the 2.2 million square foot Liberty Center in Ballston and has planned, developed and invested in over 3 million square feet of mixed-use space in Arlington, including some of the market’s most prominent office buildings, high end residential high-rise buildings and most notable retail locations in Northern Virginia.
- Andrew Rubin, Principal of the Rubin Group, which he founded in 2009. Andrew is responsible for the identification and acquisition of new opportunities, fundraising activities for both debt and equity, settlement, development planning, entitlement, and is involved in operational tasks including design and construction management. Before starting his own firm, Mr. Rubin was a project manager for a non-profit developer of affordable housing.
- Paul Grayson, Principal at Beckham-Gumbin Ventures, a commercial real estate investment and development company that pursues value added and opportunistic real estate investments. Prior to joining Beckham-Gumbin Ventures, Mr. Grayson worked as an associate in the US Real Estate division of The Carlyle Group in Washington, DC and in the Capital Markets Group at Walker & Dunlop in Bethesda, MD and in the Corporate Banking division at JP Morgan Chase & Co.
Please join us afterward at Ghibellina, located at 1610 14th Street, NW to continue the conversation and for networking and socializing. Special thanks to Studio Theatre for their continued sponsorship of Real Estate 101.
