ULI Washington Service Opportunity: DCBIA 25th Annual Community Improvement Day
Saturday, September 23rd, 2017
(Rain date Saturday, Oct. 7th)
8am – 12pm
(Light Breakfast and Lunch provided)
Benning Terrace Community Center
4450 G Street, SE
Washington, DC 20019
Please join ULI Washington in volunteering to improve a local park at the Benning Terrace Community Center, organized by the DC Building Industry Association; DCBIA. DCBIA has worked with local designers, contractors, city planning and HUD to improve an existing park in the community. Volunteers will be helping with painting, mulching, and planting all throughout the site.
After a unique partnership with the DC Housing Authority, DCBIA is returning to the same site as last year’s Community Improvement Day for the 2017 event. Due to last year’s effort, DCHA has invested $800k in storm water management facilities this year and prepped for DCBIA to come back and finalize the project.
Last year, DCBIA completed landscaping, interior painting, minor interior repairs, new kitchen cabinets and appliances, indoor work stations, new furniture, lockers, a foosball playing area, polished floors, outdoor shelving and storage for the Benning Terrace Soldiers football team, repaired concrete steps around the site, and other needed enhancements.
This year, you are invited to volunteer with ULI and DCBIA to finalize the updates and help create an inter-generational space for recreational and educational activities for all ages! This year, we will:
- Add more storage and organization to the indoor community center space to meet programming needs
- Create outdoor playground games
- Install new exercise equipment
- Add permanent shade structures
- Create a walking path
- Add picnic benches, art stations, and site signage
- Update the community garden
- Perform general landscaping
- And MORE!
With your help, this work will positively impact 400 families in Ward 7. Please RSVP to Emily.Weberman@uli.org by Tuesday, September 19th.
What to bring:
Closed toed shoes
Gardening gloves (DCBIA will provide some, but they tend to run out)
Water will be provided on site
Parking is at nearby Jones Memorial Church at 46th and G Streets and street parking is available.
The Center is about 1 mile from the Benning Road Metro. Please let Emily Weberman know if you will need a ride from Metro, and someone from the Community Service Committee will be in touch.
