Join Columbia Property Trust and core members of the 80M project team for a panel discussion and tour on how this project came to life and how it is just the start in a paradigm shift in commercial construction. The program will begin with a networking breakfast on the rooftop deck/covered lounge area, followed by building tours, and a panel discussion.
Valued for its biophilic and sustainable qualities, global interest in mass timber has spiked since it was first developed in Europe in the 1980s. Due to a robust lumber supply, the engineered material has already garnered a significant following in parts of Canada and the Pacific Northwest. Now, as mass timber construction gains momentum along the east coast and within major metropolitan areas, members of the real estate and urban planning communities seek to advance their knowledge of the material’s structural requirements, capabilities, and benefits.
Recognizing the enormous potential of mass timber, architecture and design firm Hickok Cole launched an internal research program exploring its viability in the District of Columbia. Following a series of reports funded by DC’s Department of Energy and Environment, as well as design prototypes, and studies, Columbia Property Trust presented the firm with an opportunity to put their research to the test, resulting in the development of 80 M Street, Washington, DC’s first-ever mass timber addition to an office building. As mass timber advocates, Hickok Cole and its partners, including Arup and Davis Construction, have continued working with local jurisdictions to educate the industry and progress the city’s building codes to further facilitate the material’s widespread use.
