The ULI Case Study Committee is excited to partner with Virginia Tech for an exclusive opportunity to explore its new Innovation Campus, a cutting-edge academic and research hub in Northern Virginia. This state-of-the-art campus is designed to foster collaboration between students, researchers, and industry leaders, shaping the next generation of technology professionals.

Virginia Tech’s Innovation campus, formerly located in the satellite campus of Falls Church, recently relocated to Potomac Yards. It is committed to equipping graduates to become leaders in their careers while helping them gain real-world experience alongside researchers, industry executives, and national policymakers. With research focusing on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Intelligent Interfaces, Wireless and Next Gen Technology, Quantum Architecture and Software Development, the campus promises to become a pipeline of first-tier research-based talent, building the foundation for a new era of technology.

Plans for the Innovation Campus were announced in November 2018 as part of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s successful bid to attract Amazon’s HQ2 to Northern Virginia. The Innovation Campus, located at 3625 Potomac Ave, is situated on 3.5 acres in the first phase of a new mixed-use development near the future Potomac Yard Metrorail Station. Construction began in September 2021 on the Innovation Campus' first building, an 11-story, 300,000 square-foot structure, which will open to the public in February 2025. The unique façade and building design gained neighborhood support and unanimous approval from the Alexandria City Council for its sustainability features and daring architectural design. Hosting research laboratories, classroom and event space, the building promises to be as innovative and trailblazing as the students who thrive there.

As a Project Manager in architecture at Niles Bolton Associates, I thrive on the puzzle that our built environment presents to us daily- and the responsibility it carries with it. New focuses on attainable housing, access to public transportation, flexible home environments, and smart urban planning has directed many of my recent projects and we continue to be challenged by clients looking for these same solutions.
