When our work and home lives radically changed in March of 2020, the design of the spaces around us had to follow suit. The first wave of changes was necessarily small-scale and focused on the short-term, like adding new HVAC filters, creating additional outdoor dining opportunities, and reconfiguring circulation patterns. As the pandemic continued, many projects under development chose to adapt more holistically, including expanded outdoor programming, self-guided leasing tours, and enhanced connectivity infrastructure to support the new work from-home environment.

Now, 12 months in, developers and designers are considering what new trends will last in a post-COVID world. While much remains uncertain, this panel will begin to explore what we can understand now about the design trends that were accelerated, altered, or created by COVID.  For example, how has COVID altered demand, in both urban and suburban environments, for residential, retail and office development?  With the increased use of telework and flexible work schedules, how is office demand, programming and interior design changing? How is residential product type, unit mix, and design changing to accommodate the increased demands on one’s residence?

Please join ULI Washington’s Young Leaders Group for an informative panel featuring developers, architects, and urban planners implementing pandemic-driven design changes. The virtual panel will discuss how changes made in the face of COVID are harbingers of further design shifts, what trends in design thinking will outlast the pandemic, and importantly, what steps can be taken to ensure design resiliency moving forward.
