DC’s newest major sports venues have been at the center of some of the city’s most vigorous new development. Nationals Park brought Major League Baseball to Navy Yard in 2008 and the neighborhood has since been transformed by thousands of residential units and an accompanying surge of office and retail. Audi Field delivered in 2018 in Buzzard Point, but construction there hasn’t stopped as numerous multifamily buildings are bringing more people and activity to an area that was previously sparse and industrial.

Now, Monumental Sports & Entertainment have signed an agreement with the city to keep the Wizards and Capitals at Capital One Arena through 2050 or longer. The venue is expected to be an anchor for the revitalization of downtown DC that the team, the city, and residents are hoping for and working towards. What will downtown look like ten years from now? What can the arena do to support the area around it, and how can its neighbors help it succeed? What have we learned from challenges and successes of the transformations of Navy Yard and Buzzard Point? What role can an arena play in revitalizing an area that is already so densely developed?

Join ULI Washington for a dynamic conversation between Crispus Gordon III of Monumental Sports & Entertainment, Nick Gordon of MRP Realty, Kritin Connall of Akridge and Mark Simpson of the Downtown DC BID for a conversation moderated by Erin Talkington of RCLCO about the role DC’s sports venues have played in its recent growth and what the future looks like for Capital One Arena and downtown.
