Community Service

What we do
Approximately every other month, we gather a group of ULI members to help local organizations fulfill their mission. The groups we work with provide a variety of much-needed goods and services throughout the Washington Metro region. Some of our recent events include:

Community Forklift in Hyattsville, MD: Community Forklift is a non-profit reuse center that provides home improvement materials, appliances, and fixtures at a low and affordable cost to the public. These materials are procured through donations of unwanted and salvaged materials throughout the entire DC metropolitan area. Community Forklift provides a range of services to the local communities by making repairs affordable to low-income families, reducing construction industry waste, promoting reuse of recycled materials, and creating green jobs. Our group helped Community Forklift with stripping and processing reclaimed lumber and paint recycling and processing.

Community of Hope in Southwest DC: Community of Hope helps the homeless population in Washington, DC with transitional housing and other services. A ULI group volunteered at the organization’s annual Holiday Market, helping children build gingerbread houses and with arts and crafts, along with greeting, distributing toys and helping with handing out hot chocolate and cookies. ULI also raised $8,000 for Community of Hope at the Inaugural ULI Washington Young Leaders Trivia Night.

Miracle League in Alexandria, VA: The Miracle League of Alexandria gives individuals with disabilities a chance to play baseball as part of a team in an organized league. The league is comprised of players, parents, coaches, buddies, fans and volunteers who come together to support, encourage, and inspire each other. The ULI group acted as “Angels in the Outfield Buddies” to league team members who needed assistance hitting the ball and fielding, and served as base coaches and catchers as well as helping in the dugout.

Interfaith Works’ Clothing Center in Rockville, MD: Interfaith Works provides a range of services to meet the needs of the poor and homeless in Montgomery County. The Interfaith Clothing Center provides qualified, low-income families with clothing and home goods free of charge, allowing them to use more of their resources on food, rent, utilities, medicine, and other basic needs. The ULI group helped move the Clothing Center to a new location, organize the new space, and sort clothes.
