The Young Leader (YL) Mentorship Program in ULI is the most exciting and enduring program one can be a part of—as senior or young professional. The DC Council recently began its 2013—2014 program cycle with a volume of 35 mentorship groups—yes, that’s right, 35 seasoned real estate industry professionals have generously dedicated their time to mentor 150+ YL members. The program is coordinated by 35 YL members (one per group); 12 of which are on the mentorship committee; and the committee includes 2 veterans who are co-chairs.
On the evening of Wednesday, September 25th, Mentor Tom Dwyer, Principal of Long Gate Associates, LLC, kicked off the event with his five mentees at Beacon Hotel’s Bar and Grill in Dupont Circle. Being easily accessible, the location proved to be a great venue for young professionals who indulge an urban lifestyle of public transit and walking. With perfect attendance, the group first met at the bar for beverages, then proceeded to a quieter restaurant level for introductions and discussions.
A successful conversation followed friendly introductions. Group Dwyer is made up fully of DC Metro locals who grew up in DC, MD and VA—a rare combination in the nation’s capital. Mentees’ organizations include Deloitte Financial Advisory Services LLP, Eastdil Secured, Neighborhood Development Company and Johns Hopkins Univ. Carey Business School. Diverse interests are represented by the different sectors. Mentees have offered to reach out to professional contacts for potential future events, and the next group meeting’s agenda is already set to discuss how the group’s mentor navigated a career in real estate.
The 2013—2014 ULI YLG Mentorship Program promises to be an exciting year in Washington, DC.
