WLI Outreach and Engagement
WLI’s Partnership with Maya Angelou Public Charter School
In late 2019, WLI Washington initiated a program to create mentorship and career development opportunities for young women and men who might not have been exposed to careers in commercial real estate. ULI Washington found an engaged partner in the Maya Angelou Public Charter School based in Washington, D.C.
Donate to the MAPCS Partnership!
Donations will be used to fund monthly lunches for the students, field trips, and an end of year celebration. Please submit donations by December 20th.
This partnership and program formally launched in October 2020 and is now in its fourth year. Each cycle includes monthly sessions for the duration of the school year. The meetings provide hospitality and business program students with a case study curriculum focused on professional readiness through the lens of real estate development. In each session, approximately 10-15 students learn directly from women and other individuals involved in various roles within the real estate space.
Content is curated to be engaging and provide students with an opportunity to ask questions and spend quality time with committee members from various disciplines. Session content has included:
- The importance of “soft” skills
- Identifying your super powers
- Discussion of careers in real estate
- Reflection and creation of vision boards
- Field trips
- Professional prep/mock interviews
