The onset of the pandemic shut down UrbanPlan new volunteer trainings across the country at the very time that schools and communities were turning to UrbanPlan for meaningful virtual programming and a tool to improve equity in real estate. But necessity is the mother of invention, and the need for new and more diverse volunteers to meet the growing demand gave birth to an innovative virtual format for UrbanPlan volunteer training.
Converting to virtual training was a challenge but brought some unexpected benefits. Teams meet in Zoom breakout rooms instead of over a table, enabling participants to join without ever having to leave their desk. The hard copy handbook has been replaced by an easy to search interactive pdf version. And while nothing beats playing with actual LEGOs, virtual trainees are able to build out their site plan proposals using a new 3D digital tool.
Another advantage of virtual training is the option to split the training into two half-days instead of one full day. Previously, split trainings were cost-prohibitive due to instructor travel, venue and catering costs, but the elimination of those costs for virtual delivery made split trainings feasible. Furthermore, the challenge of keeping participants engaged online prompted changes to make the initial portions of the training more interactive; trainees no longer need to wait to start building for the fun to start. Last but not least, virtual trainings allow participants from all over the country to join a training. Virtually trained volunteers report that they have appreciated the opportunity to network and brainstorm with peers from other ULI district councils.
Eight ULI Washington members participated in virtual volunteer trainings this summer, and additional opportunities arise every day. So, if you are interested in becoming an UrbanPlan volunteer, don’t let the pandemic stop you. Email [email protected] to let us know of your interest – we look forward to “seeing” you in a virtual training soon!
